Portugal’s stunning beaches have been drawing in tourists for decades. Now, 25 years after the Blue Flag scheme was initiated to recognise high environmental and quality standards, Portugal accounts for nearly 9% of the entire world’s Blue Flags. The country has added a further 32 flags to its total in 2022, with 431 Portuguese beaches, marinas and boats now proudly flying the Blue Flag.

For those buying a second home in Portugal, the huge number of Blue Flags provides plenty of confidence in the quality of the country’s beaches, according to real estate agency Ideal Homes Portugal. The company is selling a range of homes close to Blue Flag beaches and marinas, with many buyers citing proximity to the ocean as a key part of their decision to buy a Portuguese second home.

“People list many reasons for wanting to buy property in Portugal. For those looking for a holiday property in which to build treasured family memories, proximity to a lovely beach is usually somewhere near the top of the list. Investors are also keen on homes near beaches, as it makes their property more rentable. With well over 400 Blue Flags, the quality of Portugal’s beaches is undeniable.”

Portugal has recently revealed that it will fast-track visitors from Britain through electronic passport gates when they arrive in the country, thus speeding up the arrivals process considerably. The country is gearing up for a major influx of Brits over the summer months. The UK was the second largest tourism revenue contributor to Portugal in January and February this year. Meanwhile, overall visitor numbers were up by 507% in February 2022 when compared with the same month in 2021, according to the Portuguese National Statistics Institute (INE), with 1.2 million people choosing to visit Portugal.

Visitors looking to pick up a property in Portugal this year have some exceptional options available to them. The Algarve has more Blue Flags than any other region, with 86 in total. One of those is the picturesque Porto de Mós beach. Buyers can pick up a two-bedroom, two-bathroom apartment with communal pool within walking distance of it for just €385,000. With an outdoor terrace with built-in BBQ, the apartment is ideal for making the most of summer in Portugal.

Buyers in Vilamoura, meanwhile, have Vilamoura Beach and Vilamoura Marina on their doorstep, both of which have achieved Blue Flag status. Close to the beach and with panoramic sea views, this furnished apartment with communal pool and on-site tennis court costs €580,000. Golf facilities and Vilamoura’s popular casino are nearby, while Faro Airport is just a 25-minute drive, making access from the UK easy.

“With the use of electronic gates for visitors from the UK once more, and no need for passenger locator forms, holidaying in Portugal is going to be a popular choice for many British families this summer. The country’s stunning beaches are easy to fall in love with and with visitor numbers leaping up, we expect a busy season ahead when it comes to people wanting to find the perfect beachfront property in Portugal.”
